C.I Turk goes Over the Edge
Bill Turk, Sunday 11 October 2009 - 13:09:24 //
Over the EdgeIn order to raise much needed sponsorship for Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, C.I Simon Turk today threw himself off the edge of the Forth Railway Bridge. The charity carries out medical research, attempting to find ways to improve the quality of life of people who have suffered or are suffering from chest, heart and stroke illness.
Despite being tethered to the bridge by an abseiling line, it still takes guts and a certain amount of stupidity to take that first step off the edge and trust your life to a 1/2" diameter nylon rope.
Simon successfully completed his challenge taking about a minute to abseil the 165Ft from top to bottom and in doing so raised the grand sum of £440 for the charity.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Simon to say thankyou to all members of staff and cadets at 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron who sponsored him
This is the second crazy thing that he has done in aid of charity, the first being a tandem parachute jump. God only knows what he'll get up to next. Again, my thanks to all concerned.

Bill Reid Trophy
Bill Turk, Wednesday 07 October 2009 - 06:35:32 //
Bill Reid Trophy winnerAfter a demanding selection procedure held at Joint Air Cadet Headquarters, Royal Air Force Leuchars, St. Andrews, Cadet Sergeant Paul Watson was selected as the "Top" leadership cadet from Dundee & Central Scotland Wing, Air Training Corps. The trophy was presented to Sgt Watson by Mr John Laing, from the Tay Branch of the Aircrew Association.
Both Sergeant Watson and Cadet Flight Sergeant Blair Nicol, were chosen to attend, after successfully completing an intensive weekend leadership course at HMS Caledonia. Their final tasks to determine the winner of the Bill Reid VC leadership trophy, included a powerpoint presentation on a leader of their choice, and thereafter being questioned in depth by the selection board, as to why they made their respective choices (Sgt Watson - Napolean Bonaparte and Flt Sgt Nicol, Ghengis Khan), identification of leadership qualities and a summary of their leaders legacy. Finally, they were interviewed by the selection board, to discuss leadership as it related to them, their cadet career to date, their personal development and career aspirations, whilst they were also questioned on their knowledge of Bill Reid VC and the Aircrew Association.
The winning trophy was donated by the Tay Branch of the Aircrew Association in memory of Flight Lieutenant Bill Reid VC, who at the age of 21 in 1943, took part in a raid on Dusseldorf, Germany. Flt Lt Reid was a pilot in an Avro Lancaster aircraft, which was attacked by a Messerschmitt Bf110. Despite severe damage to his aircraft, and despite being attacked again, and with some of his crew having been killed, Flt Lt Reid completed his mission in Germany. He returned back to the UK, albeit having suffering from multiple injuries and loss of blood. His tenacity and devotion to duty, along with superb courage and leadership, were quoted in his Victoria Cross citation.

GS Success
Bill Turk, Friday 21 August 2009 - 06:36:08 //
Cpl Bernards Gliding ScholarshipAfter a year long wait, Cdt Cpl Bernard has finally managed to go Solo. He previously attempted his Gliding Scholarship last year but due to inclement weather was grounded and never got the chance to try for his Solo.
On the 1st of August, he again travelled to RM Condor and this time, with the exception of the Tuesday he got Gliding everyday. In his own words, he said that it was an experience not to be missed and was glad he had applied.
It wasn't until the Thursday prior to lunch that he was told he would be doing his Solo checks and that he was to relax (easier said than done). Later that afternoon, he was launched with his instructor from 661 VGS and they completed two circuits. It was only after landing that Keiran was informed that he was ready to go solo.
I asked him how he felt knowing that when he uttered to two words "ALL OUT", he would be on his own as captain of the glider. He said "The feeling was the best ever in my life". I was really pleased with myself and at the end of the week I was presented with my Silver Wings.
Keiran has since been invited by both 661 and 662 VGS to attend and advance to his AGT (Advanced Glider Training) which if he is successful, will mean that the next time you go gliding, you could have Cpl Bernard as your instructor. This is a fantastic achievement for Keiran especially when you consider the fact that he hasn't even got his driving license. Well done Keiran.
