Flying

No 12 Air Experience Flight -
Operates from RAF Leuchars in order to fly Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force (RAF) cadets from the Scottish Region. Nearly 4,000 cadets are flown for a 20 - minute flight each year. The AEF is staffed by a full-time Senior Instructional Officer and up to 20 part-time pilots who are commissioned into the VR(T). Flights from RAF Leuchars cover Edinburgh, Aberdeen And Dundee ATC Wings whilst flights from RAF Kinloss cover Highland Wing.

During the summertime which is the busiest time for 12 AEF, all cadets attending annual camps at RAF Leuchars, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Kinloss and RAF Buchan are flown in just 600 hours for a total of approximately 1,700 cadets.

Until recently, 12 AEF flew the Bulldog T1 aircraft the same as all other AEF's. These have now been replaced by the Grob 115E which is to be known within the RAF as the Tutor. The Tutor is a two crew, side by side aircraft, built in Germany and will be flown in an all-white colour scheme with blue trim rather than the yellow and black previously seen on the Bulldog. The aircraft has full aerobatic capabilities and is designed for short take-off and landing on both hard and grass surfaces. Another feature of the Tutor being supplied to UAS's and AEF's is the 180Hp engine, which is an upgrade on that supplied to the Royal Navy's 160Hp version.

1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron proudly boasts being the first Squadron in Dundee & Central Scotland Wing to have flown in the new Grob Tutor
