Charity and Conservation

Charity
Within the Squadron, we support various charities regularly throughout the year. We support RAFA, SSAFA, The Red Cross and the Earl Haig Fund with street collections and then we help other charities as and when required.

Some of the other charities we have supported in the past are Guide Dogs for the Blind, The Seva Trust, Children in Need, Comic Relief and Mission Aviation.

We gather money together in various ways. These include sponsored events like Cycles, stay awakes, non uniform nights and also hold raffles etc.

Recently for comic relief, the cadets held a 50's, 60's and 70's fancy dress disco which included four cadets having their legs waxed (male cadets I hasten to add)!!!. This event raised £250.00 which was a great effort from everyone, especially our now "hairless" cadets.

Conservation

We also get involved in conservation events and have in the past been commended with awards for our help in the local communities. We have adopted a beach (burtisland), made and placed bat boxes in trees on our base at HMS Caledonia and are currently looking to help a new venture for us at Shiresmill (Riding for the Disabled). All of these great causes will continue to be featured on the squadron website.

Following a visit to Shiresmill by the Boss, the Adjutant and A/Sgt Selfridge to establish what work was required, this was the first visit by cadets. Fourteen cadets accompanied by members of staff turned up on the day to help out on a project that could last the whole year. Some months ago, one of the stables was burnt to the ground leaving nothing more than a pile of ashes and a lot of rusty old nails. Before work could continue and before horses could be let back into the field, it was important that all the nails were picked up. Armed with nothing more than rakes, magnets, one metal detector and our bare hands this task was completed by the end of the day. The cadets, assisted by Mr Bevans also made a good start on clearing away the overhanging branches of trees and the weeds and nettles that were consuming the lower boundary fence. Despite putting an announcement on radio forth for people to assist with petrol strimmers, nobody answered our plea for help. If you read this and are aware of anybody that can help on our next visit, please let A/Sgt Selridge or myself know as soon as you can.

If you know of any works in progress that we can get involved in, please speak to A/Sgt Selfridge and make her aware.

Welcome
