The course was incredible with high winds upto 35mph and peaks of over 1000m a very rewarding course all completions except FS C Kenney who had to leave half way through to help transit our other cadets out this weekend Cdt's Cowan, Moncur, Fairfield and Saunders were stationed up at RAF Leuchars training on the L98A2 Rifle. The weekend concisted of training Saturday and sunday morning with weapons handling tests Sunday afternoon. Instead of wanting till cadets needed picked up at 5 FS C Kenney decided to join in and was able to get some firing practice and coaching experience on the L98A2 at the Leuchars Range much to the envy of the ones training all weekend.

This course is the first to be performed in the Corps and acts as a good footing to the lowlands leader course qualifying you to take groups out onto the hills for expeditions such as the Duke of Edinburgh's award.

1145 RC Flying off to lma elvington

Cadets went on an adventure to the Large Model Air show at Elvington Airfield outside York from the 8th of August to the 10th. Cadets from 1145, 1145DF, 1001, 1701 and 2 cadets from Highland wing travelled down on Friday and arrived that night to be greeted by the staff of the event. The airfield was covered in caravans and tents. The weather over the weekend was not the best having thunder storms on Friday night but the sun was shining for a great day of RC flying on the Saturday. There was not only scale models but full size aircraft such as XH558 the last flying Vulcan that flew past and several others including the Newcastle Jet Provost which 4 lucky cadets got to walk around, sit in and talk to the pilots. The air show was great fun even though we had to help out with parking and help people on the flight line but it was worth the job! Cadets also visited the Yorkshire Air Museum to witness aviation in the past on this amazing location. Cadets learnt a lot from the weekend and can't thank the staff enough for arranging what became a fantastic weekend! Photos Calum Maxwell

1145 head to the capital for WWI Parade

10/8/2014

On Sunday the 10th of August a group of cadets from 1145 travelled to edinburgh castle to participate in the parade to commemorate the first world war. The cadets watched a display of the armed forces bands and then joined the parade that marched down the royal mile to the Scottish Parliament building. The event was televised so you may or may not have seen us? Our section of the parade, the Air Training Corps was led by none other than our very own Flight Lieutenant Kyle closely followed by Warrant Officer Ross and other Officers from South East Scotland wing then us, the cadets. The parade was a big success and we all hope to be able to re experience something like it again in the future.

Cwo Mitchell Flies Solo on His Air CAdet Pilot Scheme

5/8/2014

On the 5th of August CWO Mitchell started his Air Cadet Pilot Scheme (ACPS).

" I was overwhelmed that I had been given this opportunity, as I had enjoyed my gliding scholarship in 2013. The course provided the cadets and I luxurious accommodation as well as twelve hours training to fly a light engine aircraft.  The length of the course is determined on how quickly the student can get through the twelve hours flying as well as a 50 minute ground exam. On average the cadets take 11 days to complete the course, if however you do not fly solo after the twelve hours you will not receive your award. Those who passed the ground exam as well as being a competent pilot and being able to land the aircraft safety were given the opportunity to go flying on their own. "

"After getting through the intense syllabus , which involved being taught all the controls, checks, take offs ,landings, emergency landings and being able to fly a circuit at 1000 feet. It felt amazing being the first one on my course to go solo. I was told that my instructor would leave the aircraft just before my final checks were completed and I felt sensational knowing I would fly alone. The best part of my solo flight was being able to fulfil my dream of flying. I’ll never forget when the air traffic controller said “Congratulations” once I had landed and vacated the runway."

"Overall I would thoroughly recommend this course to any cadet willing to achieve this great experience.  "
